Oracle SQL & PL/SQL
Personal study sheet
This is an independent study aid, not an official syllabus, admission assessment or promise of class assignments. Confirm the current teaching scope and practical access with the office.
Your notes remain in this open document; this sheet has no submission or automatic saving. Print after writing to keep a copy.
Set your starting point
Useful foundations: An understanding of spreadsheets and tables is helpful; previous programming experience is not essential for introductory SQL.
Explore the learning roadmap
01Model relational data
Identify tables, primary keys and relationships from a simple business problem. Explain how constraints protect data quality before writing complex queries.
02Query with clear conditions
Practise projection, filtering, sorting and null handling. Check expected row counts and boundary cases instead of assuming any returned result is correct.
03Combine and summarise data
Use joins, grouping and subqueries with an explicit understanding of each table's level of detail. Investigate duplicated totals caused by incorrect joins.
04Change data safely
Discuss transactions, commit, rollback and appropriate access. Use practice records and check the selection condition before any update or delete operation.
05Structure PL/SQL logic
Explore blocks, variables, control flow, procedures and exception handling. Keep business logic understandable and choose clear inputs, outputs and error behaviour.
06Review correctness and performance
Read query behaviour on sample data, discuss indexes and avoid assuming that an index improves every operation. Explain a result and a transaction boundary during a practical review.
Put the ideas into contextOracle SQL & PL/SQL: a worked study example
Illustrative scenario for discussion and self-study.
A fictional inventory stores products separately from their stock movements. Write down the question 'Which products are below their reorder level?' before choosing tables and joins. Include a product with no recorded movement and explain how a missing joined row differs from a recorded quantity of zero.
What to check in your work
- Check join behaviour and aggregation against hand-calculated records.
- Explain when a query is enough and when procedural logic is needed.
How this pathway compares
SQL expresses questions about relational data; PL/SQL adds procedural programming in Oracle. Python is useful for broader application logic, and Power BI is a comparison when the immediate goal is reporting from prepared data.
Check your reasoning
How can a correct-looking SQL join produce an inflated total?
Suggested explanation
A one-to-many join can repeat a value from the parent row. Establish the grain of each table and inspect a small joined sample before aggregating. Compare the result with a known source total and decide whether detail rows need their own calculation.
Plan the conversation
Ask about the actual syllabus, practical environment and feedback arrangements. Confirm fees, duration, trainer and current batch schedule directly; this sheet supplies none of those details.
