Azure Data Engineering
Personal study sheet
This is an independent study aid, not an official syllabus, admission assessment or promise of class assignments. Confirm the current teaching scope and practical access with the office.
Your notes remain in this open document; this sheet has no submission or automatic saving. Print after writing to keep a copy.
Set your starting point
Useful foundations: SQL, basic Python and an understanding of files and databases are helpful.
Explore the learning roadmap
01Map a data pipeline
Identify sources, destinations, expected update frequency and failure impact. Distinguish ingestion, transformation, orchestration and serving rather than treating them as one tool.
02Organise cloud storage
Discuss file formats, folder conventions and access boundaries. Consider how raw data is retained, how curated data is produced and how sensitive fields are handled.
03Transform with SQL and Spark concepts
Practise filtering, joins, aggregations and schema handling on sample data. Compare a single-machine transformation with distributed processing and explain when the added complexity is justified.
04Orchestrate dependable runs
Model dependencies, schedules and parameters. Plan retries and incremental loading so a repeated run does not silently create duplicate records.
05Check quality and observability
Test row counts, keys, nulls and reconciled totals at meaningful points. Keep enough run information to distinguish an empty source from a failed extraction or transformation.
06Review security and cost
Use least-privilege access, controlled secrets and a cleanup plan. Discuss the selected Azure services, account permissions and service charges before any live-cloud practical work.
Put the ideas into contextAzure Data Engineering: a worked study example
Illustrative scenario for discussion and self-study.
A daily sample file arrives twice, while a second file has a missing customer identifier. Design a pipeline that avoids counting the repeated delivery twice, separates incomplete records for review and records which batch produced each output.
What to check in your work
- Explain how rerunning a completed batch avoids duplicate records.
- Keep rejected data traceable without silently dropping it.
How this pathway compares
Data engineering prepares reliable inputs for analysis. Power BI focuses on reports built from those inputs, while the Databricks and Spark guide explores distributed processing when data size or processing needs justify it.
Check your reasoning
What should a pipeline record when a source file is rejected?
Suggested explanation
Record the input identity, validation rule, failed record or field and a useful recovery action. Keep sensitive values out of general logs. Separate a rejected input from a successfully processed one so a later rerun can be explained and checked.
Plan the conversation
Ask about the actual syllabus, practical environment and feedback arrangements. Confirm fees, duration, trainer and current batch schedule directly; this sheet supplies none of those details.
